5 Best Cities To Visit In Mexico

Being a California native, Mexico has always been a stones throw away, with little to no hassle heading down to Rosarito for a weekend at the beach. My family always kept a small trailer on reserve down there, perfect for a low-budget trip. But beyond Baja, we never made an effort to explore further into the country. Places like Mexico City, Cancun, Puerta Vallarta – these were places we talked about, but we never got a chance to see them first hand, nor did we know how to get there. At best we hoped of driving or flying to one city and having an extended stay at a resort, and never something as luxurious as a multi-city vacation.

However, now that I’m in the travel world and I’ve toured a handful of countries, I don’t think it’s a dream; it’s a reality. Exploring Mexico is completely possible, and not just one area, but the best cites and attractions it has to offer.  There are many gorgeous resorts, entrancing cities, and lovely landscapes to visit, and all are easily accessible from its enchanting capitol.

1. Mexico City

Mexico’s largest city, economic and cultural center, federal capitol, and, for you, the traveler, its the gateway to Mexico. From here one can travel northwest into Jalisco to see Guadalajara and the agave fields that birthed Tequila or much further to the sunny beaches of Puerto Vallarta. To the south we have the even more gorgeous Acapulco resort city and the enthralling Oaxaca. Finally, to the east rests Merida, Cancun, and the Maya ruins of Chichen Itza. For those looking to stay a few days Mexico City, there are plenty of activities from theme parks like Six Flags Mexico, the captivating Teotihuacan ruins – which goes well with a trip to the National Museum of Anthropology – a tour of the Frida Kahlo Museum, or simply a Mexico City day tour. But don’t get too settled into the lovely hotels of Mexico City, cause there’s plenty more to show you.

2. Acapulco

One of the true resort cities in Mexico (and the oldest), Acapulco is a must see vacation spot for any trip. Picturesque white sandy beaches, tantalizing restaurants, fantastic night clubs – Acapulco is the resort city of your dreams. Many of the hotels along Acapulco Bay were blessed with the patronage of famous figures like John Weismuller, Frank Sinatra, John Wayne. So get out of your fantastic hotel room and explore the city that enthralled so many world-renowned celebrities. If you get a few days in the city then you should enjoy a night tour of Acapulco Bay and witness the world famous Acapulco Cliff Diving show, where the death-defying divers leap into the La Quebarada gorge!

3. Merida

Crown jewel of the Yucatan and White City of Mexico, Merida is a gorgeous, colonial city, rife with captivating cultural institutions, having been considered the America Capitol of Culture in 2000. As you move through the city you’ll notice the intricate sculptures and captivating buildings – including your hotel. Despite being founded as a Spanish city, the people of Merida bare strong roots in early Maya culture, and is one of the best cities to witness the Dia de los Muerto celebrations. From here one can enjoy a day trip to Chichen Itza for an engaging tour of the ruins with a fantastic evening show – or if you’re truly looking to truly discover the Maya World then enjoy a 7-day tour of Mexico City, Merida, and Cancun.

4. Cancun

Like Acapulco, Cancun is internationally famous as a resort city and the luxurious hotels that line its dazzling coastline are testament to this. Its a given that you’re going to spend the day snorkeling the gorgeous waters and evenings at the night clubs and shows. But few realize the cultural significance of the city – namely its convenient location besides beloved and well-preserved Maya ruins. The city provides easy access to Chichen Itza, Coba, and Tulum, important archaeological sites. Whether you’re visiting on an extended tour or all-inclusive vacation package, take some time to visit these alluring sites – you won’t be disappointed!

5. Chichen Itza

Of course we couldn’t mention Mexico without giving an in-depth look at Chichen Itza. Once a major center to the Maya world and one of the largest cities in the Americas before Columbus, Chichen Itza still stands today as a engaging sight to see. Centered around El Castillo, which towers over the area at 151 feet, the main part of the city was about 2 square miles in size and extended further with small residences. Beyond the El Castillo, a tour of Chichen Itza will allow time to explore the Sacred Cenote, Temple of Warriors, Temple of the Bearded Men, Temple of the Jaguar, and many, many buildings. Though its depopulated, there’s enough attractions, structures, and visitors to claim Chichen Itza is still a lively city worth visiting.
