How Long is Spring Break in the US

Spring break is a period of time when schools and colleges are closed for a week or more, usually in March or April. The origin and meaning of spring break vary depending on the region and the institution, but it is generally seen as a time to relax, have fun, and travel.

Spring break dates differ across the US, but they typically fall between March and mid-April. The most common weeks for spring break are the second and third weeks of March.

In 2026, the exact dates also vary by school, it is suggested to refer to the official calendar. Flights and hotels along the East Coast tend to rise sharply once February ends, so booking 2-4 months ahead helps secure better prices, especially for high-demand cities like Orlando, Miami, and Charleston.

23. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

As the birthplace of American democracy, Philadelphia is buzzing with excitement as we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary. It is an incredible educational destination where you can visit Independence Hall and see the Liberty Bell.

But Philly is also fun and gritty. Run up the “Rocky Steps” at the Museum of Art, eat your way through the Reading Terminal Market, and explore the interactive Franklin Institute. It is a walkable city rich in culture and offers a more affordable price point than nearby NYC.

24. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Located where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, Virginia Beach holds the Guinness World Record for the longest pleasure beach in the world. The famous three-mile boardwalk is perfect for biking and rollerblading in the spring sunshine.

Families will love the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center and the First Landing State Park, which offers distinct trails through cypress swamps. It is a classic, affordable family vacation on the East Coast with plenty of hotel options right on the oceanfront.

25. Newport, Rhode Island

For a taste of Gilded Age glamour, head to Newport. Spring is a lovely time to take the famous Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path that combines the natural beauty of the shoreline with the architectural history of the city’s gilded age.

You can tour the spectacular mansions like The Breakers and Marble House to see how the Vanderbilt family lived. Newport also offers a bustling harbor filled with yachts and excellent seafood restaurants, making it a sophisticated yet accessible spring getaway.

26. Cape May, New Jersey

If you want a peaceful, romantic, and low key spring break destination, Cape May is America’s oldest seaside resort. The entire city is a National Historic Landmark, famous for its concentration of pristine Victorian gingerbread houses.

In spring, the town is quiet and blooming. You can hunt for “Cape May Diamonds” (quartz pebbles) on the beach, climb the lighthouse, or enjoy birdwatching as migratory birds pass through. It is a stark, relaxing contrast to the high-energy boardwalks of classic Jersey shore towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the warmest place on the East Coast for spring break?

Miami and the Florida Keys are the warmest, with average highs in the 70s and 80s°F. Orlando and St. Augustine are also reliably warm, though evenings can be cool.

What are some affordable family vacations on the East Coast?

Myrtle Beach, SC and Virginia Beach, VA offer great value with plenty of budget-friendly hotels. Camping or renting cabins in state parks (like near Asheville or the Outer Banks) is another great way to save money.

Where can I go for a low-key spring break?

Avoid the big cities and major theme parks. Instead, look at Tybee Island, GA, Amelia Island, FL, or the Outer Banks, NC. These spots offer scenery and relaxation without the spring break party crowds.

Is the ocean warm enough to swim in April?

Only in South Florida (Miami, Keys). In the Carolinas and Georgia, the water is still quite chilly (usually 60s°F), though kids often don’t mind! In the Northeast, it is definitely too cold for swimming without a wetsuit.

What should I pack for an East Coast spring break?

Layers are key! The weather can be unpredictable. Pack a swimsuit for the south, but bring a light jacket and hoodies for the evenings, regardless of where you go. If you are heading north (DC, NYC, Boston), bring a warm coat and comfortable walking shoes.

As you plan your spring break adventure along the vibrant East Coast, let the kaleidoscope of destinations spark your imagination and beckon you to new experiences. Whether you’re drawn to the sun-drenched shores of Florida, the historic charm of New England, or the untamed wilderness of Maine, each destination offers a unique tapestry of sights, sounds, and sensations waiting to be explored.

Recent Hantavirus Outbreak Information

In May 2026, a specific health alert was issued regarding a Hantavirus cluster that had made international headlines. It is important to distinguish between this specific event and the general risk to travelers on the continent.

As of early May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the ECDC have been monitoring a cluster of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) cases.

The Source: The outbreak originated on a cruise ship (the MV Hondius) traveling through the South Atlantic. Several European passengers were affected.

Symptoms of Hantavirus: The virus has an incubation period of 8 weeks. Common early symptoms include fever, fatigue, body aches, headache, chills, and dizziness. Within 4–10 days, the condition can rapidly worsen, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, pulmonary edema, and hypoxia.

The Risk Factor: Hantavirus is typically contracted through contact with infected rodent droppings, saliva, or urine. The 2026 cases were specifically linked to the Andes virus (ANDV) strain, which is one of the few hantaviruses where rare human-to-human transmission is possible.

Status in Europe: While some returning passengers were treated in European hospitals (notably in Switzerland and the Netherlands), there is no evidence of a community outbreak within European cities.

Travel Advisory: Since this virus is transmitted through prolonged or close contact, we recommend that you avoid crowded places as much as possible. This includes bars and large gatherings. You should also wash your hands frequently and avoid contact with rodents.

Is It Safe to Travel to Europe Now with Iran War

As news of the Iran and Israel conflict updates daily, especially since we already know this war has severely impacted tourism in the Middle East. So, is it safe to travel to Europe now with Iran war tensions dominating the international news cycle?

The answer is yes. Europe’s major tourist cities are thousands of miles away from active conflict zones. Daily life in these places continues as usual. For travelers heading to Europe, this conflict primarily impacts flight routes. If airspace over a specific region in the Middle East becomes risky, commercial flights will reroute around that area. If you’re flying to destinations in the Far East, your flight time may be slightly longer.

Europe Travel Advisory

If you want to know the real facts regarding travel safety in Europe, the U.S. State Department is your absolute best resource. They issue specific, colored safety grades for every single country on the planet. Understanding travel advisories in Europe will save you a massive amount of unnecessary anxiety.

Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions

This is the lowest risk rating. It indicates that the country is generally very safe, with most of Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, and the Mediterranean currently maintaining this top-tier safety status.

This includes:

Nordic countries: Iceland, Finland, and Norway.

Eastern and Central Europe: Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia.

Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Western and Southern Europe: Switzerland, Ireland, Portugal, and Greece.

Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

In Western Europe, this is typically due to the potential presence of isolated terrorist threats, sudden outbreaks of civil unrest, or highly organized pickpockets operating in crowded tourist areas.

Key hubs: France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Northern and Western Europe: United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Currently, European vacation destinations do not fall into this category. Level 3 warnings are typically only issued for specific, localized border regions, areas near active conflict zones, or during temporary periods of extreme national crisis.

Level 4: Do Not Travel

Currently, the State Council has placed three specific Eastern European countries under a strict Level 4 warning: Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus.

The Safest Countries to Visit in Europe

When you seek answers to “How safe is it to travel to Europe now?”, these European countries will provide them. With exceptionally low crime rates and excellent healthcare systems, they ensure you enjoy a worry-free vacation.

Iceland

Iceland has long been regarded as one of the safest countries in the world. Isolated from the mainland with a sparse population, it experiences virtually no violent crime. The nation boasts some of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes on Earth and is also an exceptional location for viewing the Northern Lights.

Top Destinations

Reykjavik: Iceland’s capital and the starting point for most trips to Iceland, it’s very walkable. You can see the towering Hallgrimskirkja church, and shop for cozy wool sweaters on Laugavegur street.

Akureyri: Known as the “Capital of the North,” this small city sits at the base of a massive fjord. It serves as the ultimate base camp for viewing the Northern Lights and booking premier whale-watching boat tours.

Key Considerations

Iceland’s greatest safety factor lies in its natural environment, where the weather is extremely unpredictable. “Sneaker waves” are massive, sudden waves that surge high up the beach. They regularly pull tourists into the freezing ocean. Never turn your back to the water here. Additionally, volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula is an ongoing reality. You should always check the local safety website, safetravel.is, before driving anywhere.

Switzerland

As a strictly neutral, affluent, and highly organized nation, Switzerland remains virtually untouched by conflict. Its streets are immaculately clean, and petty theft is exceptionally rare compared to other major European hubs. If you seek an unadulterated Alpine getaway without the constant need to look over your shoulder, Switzerland is your ideal destination.

Top Destinations

Zurich: This is the main financial hub, but it feels incredibly romantic. You can wander through a gorgeous old town right on the Limmat River, shop on the luxurious Bahnhofstrasse, and take boat rides across Lake Zurich.

Lucerne: This highly photogenic city gives you the iconic Chapel Bridge, a stunning wooden covered bridge lined with flowers. It acts as the perfect gateway city before you head up into the towering central Alps.

Geneva: Located in the French-speaking region, Geneva is the global hub for diplomacy. You can view the massive Jet d’Eau fountain shooting water 460 feet into the air and tour the European headquarters of the United Nations.

Key Considerations

The real local safety precautions involve altitude and alpine sports. If you take a high-speed cable car up to 12,000 feet, you might experience severe altitude sickness. You will feel dizzy, nauseous, and out of breath. You need to drink plenty of water and move slowly. Furthermore, alpine weather is brutal. A sunny morning can turn into a blizzard by noon. Always pack warm layers in your day bag. If you are skiing in the winter, never go off-piste. Avalanches are a constant, deadly threat to reckless skiers.

Finland

Finland is far from the hustle and bustle, where culture revolves around nature and tranquility. With thousands of pristine lakes and a deep-rooted tradition of saunas, you’ll find a relaxing getaway here.

Top Destinations

Helsinki: The capital sits right on the Baltic Sea. It boasts incredible modern architecture, the stunning rock-carved Temppeliaukio Church, and fantastic local food markets right on the harbor.

Rovaniemi: If you head north to Lapland, you hit Rovaniemi. This is the official home of Santa Claus. It is the absolute best city on earth to book a glass igloo and watch the Northern Lights dance across the winter sky.

Key Considerations

Similarly, in Finland, nature is the most important factor. If you visit Lapland in January, temperatures drop well below zero. You can get frostbite in minutes if your skin is exposed. You must wear proper thermal base layers. If you rent a car to drive through the countryside, watch out for wildlife. Reindeer and massive moose wander onto the highways constantly.

Denmark

Denmark has consistently been ranked among the safest places for women to travel alone. It boasts not only a rich history and culture but also distinctive natural landscapes and a unique fairy-tale atmosphere.

Top Destinations

Copenhagen: The capital boasts historic architecture and harbor views. You can walk through the historic Tivoli Gardens amusement park, eat world-class pastries, and see the brightly colored townhouses lining the famous Nyhavn canal.

Aarhus: Denmark’s second-largest city is a fantastic cultural hub. It features ARoS, a massive modern art museum known for its rainbow panorama walkway, and Den Gamle By, a brilliant open-air museum of historic Danish buildings.

Key Considerations

What is the biggest threat to your safety in Denmark? Bicycles. The locals take cycling incredibly seriously. Bicycles are the primary mode of transportation, and the dedicated bike lanes are essentially high-speed highways. Cyclists ride fast, and they will not stop for a tourist who blindly wanders into their path. Always look both ways before stepping across a red asphalt bike lane.

Norway

Norway possesses an impressive social security network, and due to its citizens enjoying an exceptionally high quality of life, the crime rate is extremely low. You will find it very safe to travel through cities and the wilderness countryside.

Top Destinations

Oslo: This modern capital sits at the head of the Oslofjord. It is filled with incredible museums, including the towering Munch Museum and fascinating exhibits dedicated to polar expeditions and Viking history.

Bergen: Bergen acts as the absolute best gateway to the massive, deep western fjords. You can wander through Bryggen, the historic and colorful Hanseatic wharf, before taking the funicular train up Mount Fløyen for spectacular city views.

Tromsø: Located way up above the Arctic Circle, this snowy city is the premier destination for thrilling dog sledding, midnight sun viewing in the summer, and breathtaking whale watching in the bitter winter cold.

Key Considerations

The main safety issues revolve around hiking. Popular spots like Trolltunga or Preikestolen require grueling, multi-hour hikes. Every single year, rescue helicopters have to save tourists who tried to hike in flip-flops or got caught in a sudden rainstorm without waterproof gear. Stay on the marked trails and know your physical limits. If you are driving, be prepared for incredibly narrow, winding mountain roads with blind corners.

Austria

Austria has a long history, boasts a well-developed public infrastructure, and maintains excellent public safety in its cities. It is an ideal destination for families and older travelers seeking a tranquil, culturally rich experience.

Top Destinations

Vienna: The capital is famous for its massive imperial palaces like Schönbrunn, deep classical music history, and incredible coffee house culture. You can spend days just admiring the grand architecture along the Ringstrasse.

Salzburg: Known as the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location for The Sound of Music, Salzburg features a dominating hilltop fortress, gorgeous baroque architecture, and the beautiful Salzach River.

Innsbruck: Surrounded entirely by the towering Alps, Innsbruck is the ultimate haven for winter sports enthusiasts. Even in summer, the city provides spectacular cable car rides directly from the city center up to the mountain peaks.

Key Considerations

While violent crime is exceptionally rare, pickpockets do operate in Vienna. Keep a close eye on your belongings when watching the street performers near St. Stephen’s Cathedral or walking the crowded grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. If you leave the cities to hike in the pristine Austrian forests, you need to worry about ticks. Tick-borne encephalitis is present in rural areas. You must use strong bug spray, wear long pants, and check your skin after a hike.

Ireland

Ireland is renowned worldwide for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, where locals are exceptionally helpful. It’s an incredibly relaxed and friendly vacation destination, especially with its abundance of pubs.

Top Destinations

Dublin: As the capital, you can fully experience the atmosphere of the entire country here. View the ancient Book of Kells at Trinity College, enjoy live music in the busy Temple Bar district, and learn how the famous local stout is made at the Guinness Storehouse.

Galway: Located right on the rugged west coast, Galway is the beating heart of traditional Irish folk culture. It features a fantastic bohemian vibe, colorful storefronts, and endless street performers.

Key Considerations

You must drive on the left side of the road. This completely messes with your spatial awareness. Furthermore, rural country roads are shockingly narrow, twisting, and often lined with solid stone walls or thick hedges. Do not rush. Drive cautiously and pull over to let locals pass. When visiting the famous cliffs, especially the Cliffs of Moher, pay close attention to the wind. The gusts coming off the Atlantic Ocean are strong enough to literally blow a grown adult off their feet. Stay well behind the designated safety barriers.

Netherlands

Despite its liberal nightlife policies, the Netherlands is remarkably safe. Its public transportation system is clean and well-lit, making it a reassuring place to travel.

Top Destinations

Amsterdam: You can’t miss seeing its vast network of canals here. Learn powerful history at the Anne Frank House, view masterpieces at the Rijksmuseum, and simply enjoy the vibrant, artistic atmosphere of the Jordaan neighborhood.

Rotterdam: Unlike the historic capital, Rotterdam boasts striking, ultra-modern architecture due to rebuilding after WWII. It features a massive, bustling harbor and the incredible Markthal, a futuristic indoor food market.

Key Considerations

Just like in Denmark, the bicycles here are your biggest daily hazard. Dutch bikes are often totally silent. If you walk on the designated bike paths, you will get run over. Keep to the sidewalks. You also need to be careful around the canals. Most of the waterways in Amsterdam do not have fences or barriers. Tourists regularly fall into the freezing water, especially at night after visiting a few bars. If you choose to walk through the famous Red Light District in Amsterdam, employ basic common sense. It is heavily patrolled by police and generally safe, but taking photographs of the workers in the windows is strictly prohibited.

FAQ

Is it safe to go to Europe at the moment?

Yes, it’s very safe. The vast majority of Europe is completely stable and peaceful. Infrastructure is modern, healthcare facilities are world-class, and public transportation networks are closely monitored by security personnel. As long as you maintain basic situational awareness, like keeping an eye on your wallet in crowded squares, you’ll be fine.

Are Americans safe in Europe right now?

Absolutely. Americans are perfectly safe and heavily welcomed across the continent. There are no targeted attacks against American tourists. To ensure the best experience, simply act like a gracious guest. Try to learn a few words of the local language, keep your voice down in restaurants, and respect local customs.

What countries are under Level 4 travel advisory?

Currently, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Gaza, Libya, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Haiti, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and North Korea are on the Level 4: Do Not Travel list.

How Do You Travel from London to Paris

There are several ways to travel from London to Paris, the most common of which are by train and by plane. For those living in central London, the train is the most convenient option. However, if you’re closer to an airport like Luton or Stansted, or if you find a budget flight for the price of a sandwich, the air route might tempt you.

Train from London to Paris

This is the most classic way to travel from London to Paris, and it’s also our top recommendation. Specifically, we’re talking about the Eurostar. Since it first started zipping through the Channel Tunnel, it has completely changed the way we think about international travel.

You’ll depart from St Pancras International, a station that’s beautiful in its own right. It’s well-connected by the Tube (King’s Cross St Pancras), meaning you can get there from almost anywhere in London in under 45 minutes. The check-in process is similar to an airport, but usually much faster.

Moreover, there are generally no restrictions on the volume of liquids, and once you have cleared both departure and arrival inspections, you will not need to go through customs again upon arrival in Paris.

Train Tickets from London to Paris

Of course, Eurostar offers a variety of fare options to choose from, so you can select the one that best suits your luggage and the kind of travel experience you’re looking for.

Standard: This is the type of train ticket most travelers choose; it is both affordable and comfortable. The fare is approximately $100-$300 (£75- £220) if booked several months in advance. You can bring two suitcases and one piece of hand luggage. No weight limits.

Plus: This class offers passengers more space, with fares ranging from $200 to $400 (£150–£300). The seats here are more spacious, with more legroom, and light meals and drinks will be served. The rules and standards for carry-on luggage are the same

Premier: This is the most luxurious experience on the train, offering access to a private lounge and express boarding lanes. In addition to being able to bring one extra piece of luggage, passengers also enjoy fine dining and drinks. The fare is a flat rate of $459 (₤330).

How to Purchase

The easiest way is to book through the Eurostar website or app. Select your departure and destination cities, travel dates, and the number of passengers. Choose your train service and seat class, then enter your personal information and complete the payment. You’ll receive your e-ticket via email or directly in the app.

Of course, you can also buy tickets on-site at St Pancras International Station, either at the ticket counters or at the self-service machines. However, last-minute fares are usually more expensive.

How Long Is the Train from London to Paris

The train ride takes about 2 hours and 16 minutes, but you’ll need to factor in the time it takes to get to the station. Eurostar recommends arriving 90 minutes before departure, as you’ll need to go through security and passport control. So the total time required will be around four hours.

Flight from London to Paris

Surprisingly, a flight from London to Paris can actually be cheaper than a train ticket. The flight usually takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, and when you factor in the time needed to arrive at the airport early, the total time required is 4 hours.

Several airlines offer round-trip flights between the two cities, including easyJet, British Airways, and Air France.

British Airways & Air France: These fly mostly from Heathrow (LHR). They offer a full-service experience. However, their fares start at $100 (₤75).

EasyJet & Vueling: These are the kings of the budget route. They often fly from Gatwick (LGW) or Luton (LTN). If you travel with just a backpack, you can snag seats for as low as $30(₤22).

Which London Airport Should You Use?

Heathrow (LHR): Best if you’re coming from West London or want the reliability of major carriers.

Gatwick (LGW): Great balance of price and convenience, easily reachable via the Gatwick Express from Victoria.

London City (LCY): The absolute fastest for the business crowd. You can go from the curb to the gate in 15 minutes.

Luton/Stansted (LTN/STN): Usually the cheapest, but the train ride to the airport can take an hour and cost $25+.

How to Get the Best Flight Deals

If you want to save as much money as possible, there are also ways to save on airline tickets:

Travel Mid-Week: Tuesday and Wednesday remain the cheapest days to fly. Avoid the Friday evening rush when everyone is heading home or going on a weekend break.

The 21-Day Rule: Prices often jump sharply once you’re within three weeks of departure. Try to secure your seat at least 28 days out.

Check Nearby Airports: Don’t just search for “Charles de Gaulle.” Look at Orly (ORY) or even Beauvais (BVA). Beauvais is further out, but the bus ride is easy, and the flights are often half the price.

Other Ways to Get from London to Paris

If neither trains nor planes are suitable options for you, there are other ways to travel from London to Paris.

The Coach: Companies like FlixBus run regular services from Victoria Coach Station. The bus fare is very affordable, costing around $35 (26 pounds). However, the bus ride takes a long time, usually 7 to 9 hours.

Driving: Of course, you can also choose to drive to France, which will take about 6 hours. You can drive to Folkestone and take the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle. It’s a 35-minute crossing where you stay in your car.

Extra Tips for Traveling from London to Paris

Before you set off, here are some insider tips to make your trip easier and smoother.

Mind the Time Zone: Paris is one hour ahead of London (CET).

Download the Apps: Get the Eurostar app or Citymapper. Citymapper is vastly superior for navigating the Paris Metro.

Validate Your Metro Tickets: If you buy paper tickets, keep them until you exit the station. Ticket inspectors are common and can be very strict.

Check Your Passport: You will undergo UK exit and French entry checks upon departure, so please ensure your passport is valid.

Watch out for Pickpockets: Paris train stations and the metro are crowded, so keep a close eye on your wallet and phone.

FAQ

How much is a train ride from London to Paris?

If you book in advance, the fare will likely be around $100. If you book at the last minute, however, you can expect to pay between $200 and $300.

Is it better to travel by train or plane from London to Paris?

The train is almost always better. It drops you in the city center, has more luggage space, and is better for the environment. Only fly if you find a deal that is significantly cheaper or if you live very close to an airport.

How long is the high-speed train from London to Paris?

The actual time on the rails is about 2 hours and 16 minutes. Including check-in, the whole process takes about 4 hours.

Best Month for Fall Foliage in Canada

The best time to enjoy Canada fall foliage is from mid-September to mid-October. However, depending on the weather in some areas, this time may vary slightly.

Early to mid-September: Further North and East Canada or at higher elevations, you may start to see signs of emerging fall colors. Examples include Newfoundland and Labrador and parts of Quebec and northern Ontario.

Late September to early October: This is the time when many popular leaf peeping destinations reach their peak, especially in Ontario and Quebec. This is often considered the best time for fall foliage in Canada. The maple leaves will be at their most gorgeous in the fall!

Late October: Color may linger in southern areas, but in general, many leaves will have fallen by late October.

You can check local travel websites and fall foliage reports before your trip to help you pin down the perfect fall foliage tour.

Bangkok 3 Day Itinerary

Is three days enough to explore Bangkok? Actually, with proper planning, you can visit the three major temples, explore the bustling markets, and shop at trendy malls. Here’s the three-day itinerary I’ve put together:

Day 1

Your first day should be all about the city’s roots. Most of the iconic landmarks are clustered along the Chao Phraya River in the “Old City.”

Morning

Head straight to The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew; it’s best to leave before 9 a.m., as temperatures in Bangkok rise rapidly throughout the day. Please note that the dress code at the Grand Palace is very strict: you must wear long pants or a long skirt and cover your shoulders.

The complex is breathtaking. The Emerald Buddha sits inside, carved from a single block of jade. You’ll see intricate murals and gold-leafed stupas that shimmer so brightly.

The admission price for foreign visitors is 500 baht.

Afternoon

Not far from the Grand Palace is Wat Pho. This temple houses a 46-meter-long, gold-plated Buddha reclining in nirvana. Even the bottoms of the Buddha’s feet are impressive, inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Wat Pho is also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. If your feet are already aching, this is the place to get a legitimate, firm massage from the students at the on-site school. Admission to Wat Pho is 300 baht per person

Across the river lies Wat Arun, which you can reach by taking a small river ferry from Wat Pho Pier. The temple’s exterior stands out for its unique design, covered in broken porcelain and seashells, giving it a white, textured appearance. If you’re up for it, you can climb the steep steps to enjoy the view of the river.

Admission costs between 100 and 200 baht.

Evening

Once night falls, you have two options for your first night in Bangkok. If you enjoy a lively nightlife scene and affordable drinks, head to Khao San Road.

If you’re looking for a more peaceful and refined experience, book a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya River. Seeing the temples illuminated on the water at night offers a completely different experience.

Day 2

On the first day, you’ve already seen the historic side of Bangkok; on the second day, you can explore the city’s modern center.

Morning

If you’re interested, the Jim Thompson House is a fascinating place to visit. It’s a tranquil oasis amidst the concrete jungle. Jim Thompson was an American who revitalized Thailand’s silk industry before mysteriously disappearing in the 1960s. His home is a beautiful collection of traditional teak houses surrounded by lush gardens. Admission here is 250 baht; for those under 21, it is 150 baht.

After that, take the BTS Skytrain to Siam Station, which is the heart of Bangkok’s shopping district. You can walk between Siam Paragon, Siam Center, and Siam Discovery via elevated walkways. Even if you aren’t a shopper, the food courts here are legendary. You can find everything from 50-baht noodles to Michelin-starred dumplings.

Afternoon

If you’re feeling tired, you can take a break at a café in the mall. Or head to Lumphini Park. You can rent a swan-shaped pedal boat on the lake for a leisurely ride.

Evening

Head to Chinatown now to satisfy your taste buds—the air is filled with the aroma of toasted bread and seafood soup. Explore the night market to find your favorite flavors, and don’t miss the local specialty: slices of bread served with pandan sauce.

Day 3

Today is the last day of our 3-day in Bangkok Thailand trip. Let’s explore some of Bangkok’s local shops. It’s also a great time to pick up some souvenirs and gifts.

Morning

If your last day falls on a weekend, a visit to Chatuchak Weekend Market is a must. It’s one of the largest markets in the world, with over 15,000 stalls. You can find just about anything here: vintage clothing, ceramics, and all sorts of cute trinkets.

A quick tip: the market is like a maze, so if you see something you like, buy it right away; you’ll likely never find that stall again. Even if it’s not the weekend, Pratunam Market is still a popular local market. It features many street vendors and unique shops.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll along the riverbank in the Talat Noi area. This area is full of street art and graffiti, and there are plenty of coffee shops where you can relax.

Evening

If you have time, I highly recommend visiting a rooftop bar. Looking down on Bangkok’s night skyline and watching the city lights twinkle is the perfect way to wrap up your Bangkok what to see in 3 days itinerary.

If you’re looking for a luxurious experience, the Tower Club at Lebua is the most famous option. Personally, I prefer the more relaxed atmosphere at Tichuca Rooftop Bar, which is also more affordable.

Where to Stay in Bangkok

Bangkok is a large city, so for most visitors, staying in the city center is the most convenient option. There are also hotels in a wide range of price points to choose from.

Luxury Hotels

If you’re looking for a luxurious and comfortable experience, Bangkok offers excellent value for money at its star-rated hotels.

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok: Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, this is Thailand’s first luxury hotel, having welcomed members of the royal family and renowned writers for over 140 years. The service is unparalleled, and their riverside terrace offers the best breakfast in the city.

Dusit Thani Bangkok: Located directly across from Lumphini Park, the hotel has reopened following years of extensive renovations. As a luxury hotel based in Thailand, it offers direct access to the BTS and MRT, making it extremely convenient for travelers.

Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok: This is a literal resort in the middle of a shopping district. It’s located right behind Siam Paragon. Some rooms have direct pool access, which is a dream when the humidity hits 90%. It’s perfect if you want to walk to the best malls in the city.

Budget Hotels

Even among budget hotels, these accommodations in Bangkok are clean, well-equipped, and exceptionally well-located.

InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit by IHG: While the InterContinental brand is luxury, this specific location in Thonglor often offers incredible rates that lean toward the “attainable luxury” or mid-range budget. It’s in the trendiest part of town, surrounded by the best bars and cafes.

Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam by IHG: If you’re looking for convenience and a great location, this is the place for you. It’s just a short walk from the National Stadium BTS station, and even better, Siam Center is right next door.

Bangkok City Hotel: This is a classic choice for budget-conscious travelers. It’s located near the Ratchathewi BTS station, making it easy to get to the airport link or the shopping districts. It’s basic, but it’s clean, safe, and very affordable.

What to Eat in Bangkok

There’s no need to say much about how delicious Thai food is; whether you eat at a regular restaurant or a street food cart, you can’t go wrong.

Restaurants

Thip Samai Pad Thai: Often called the best Pad Thai in the world. They wrap the noodles in a thin omelet. Expect a line, but it moves fast.

Jeh O Chula: Famous for their “MAMA Tom Yum” noodles. This place went viral on social media, so you’ll need to arrive early or book via an app to get a table. It’s spicy, sour, and incredibly satisfying.

Krua Apsorn: A favorite of the Thai Royal Family. Their crab omelet is legendary and much more affordable than the Michelin-starred street food stalls.

Night Markets

Night markets are undoubtedly a key part of Bangkok’s food culture.

Train Night Market DanNeramit: This is the “new” version of the famous Train Market. It’s clean, has a great vibe, and offers everything from grilled scallops to “volcano” pork ribs.

Srinakarin Train Night Market: This one is further out but much bigger and more local. It’s a paradise for vintage lovers and foodies who want to escape the main tourist trail.

Where to Shop in Bangkok

Bangkok is arguably the shopping capital of Southeast Asia. You have two main options: high-end malls or bargain markets.

MBK Center: The place for electronics, phone cases, and cheap souvenirs. It’s air-conditioned but feels like a market inside. Don’t forget to haggle here!

Iconsiam: Located on the river, this is one of the most beautiful malls you’ll ever see. The ground floor has an indoor “floating market” (SookSiam) where you can buy regional food and crafts from all over Thailand.

Platinum Fashion Mall: If you want clothes, go here. It’s a wholesale mall, meaning if you buy three items, the price drops significantly. It’s crowded and chaotic, but the deals are unbeatable.

CentralWorld: This is one of the largest shopping complexes in the world. It’s more of a traditional mall with international brands like Zara and H&M, plus a massive cinema and ice rink.

Bangkok Transportation Guide

Traffic in Bangkok can be challenging, especially when traveling by car, as traffic jams are common. Fortunately, there are many transportation options available.

BTS (Skytrain) and MRT (Subway): For tourists, this is the most convenient travel option. They are clean, air-conditioned, and fly over the traffic. Buy a “Rabbit Card” for the BTS to avoid standing in line for tickets every time.

Tuk-Tuks: They are fun for a 10-minute thrill ride, but they are often more expensive than taxis. Always agree on the price before you get in.

Grab and Bolt: These are the Uber of Southeast Asia. They are great because the price is fixed, and you don’t have to worry about the driver getting lost. Just be prepared for them to sit in traffic during rush hour between 4 PM and 7 PM.

Chao Phraya Express Boat: Use the “Blue Flag” tourist boat for a flat fee to hop between temples, or use the “Orange Flag” boat (cheaper) to travel like a local.

FAQ

Is 3 days sufficient for Bangkok?

Yes, three days is plenty of time to visit the main historical sites and see the modern city.

What are some hidden gems in Thailand?

If you have more than 3 days, consider visiting Bang Krachao, known as Bangkok’s “Green Lung.” It’s an island in the river that prohibits high-rises. You can rent a bike and ride through jungle-like paths just minutes from the city center. Another gem is Talat Noi, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, filled with street art and hidden “scrap metal” alleys that are incredibly photogenic.

Which month not to visit Thailand?

I usually advise travelers to be cautious about September and October. This is the peak of the rainy season in Bangkok. While it doesn’t rain all day, when it does pour, the streets can flood quickly, and traffic becomes even more of a nightmare. The best months are typically November through February, when the weather is slightly cooler and drier.

As a traveler, I’m sure you’ve seen the news about natural disasters in Japan. On Monday, April 20, 2026, a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan. Within minutes, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings, and social media was flooded with videos of residents heading for higher ground.

Due to its unique geographical location, Japan experiences earthquakes throughout the year, but this powerful earthquake has led tourists around the world to ask the same question: Is it safe to travel to Japan now?

If you’ve already booked a trip to Japan or are currently there and worried about what might happen next, here’s detailed information about the earthquake and tsunami warnings in Japan, and what the current “megaquake” advisory really means for your trip.

Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Update

Let’s take a look at the latest news on this earthquake:

At approximately 4:53 PM local time on April 20, 2026, a massive tremor originated in the Pacific Ocean, about 100 kilometers off the Sanriku coast. While the U.S. Geological Survey initially clocked it at a 7.4 magnitude, some Japanese agencies measured it as high as 7.7.

The shaking was intense enough to be felt all the way in Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers to the south, where high-rise buildings swayed for a minute or two. But what is truly worrying is the tsunami; the JMA immediately issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coastlines of Aomori, Iwate, and parts of Hokkaido, predicting waves up to three meters (about 10 feet).

However, it appears that the worst-case scenario has not materialized, while an 80-centimeter (about 31-inch) wave hit Kuji Port in Iwate and smaller surges were recorded in Miyako and Hachinohe, the warnings have since been downgraded or lifted in most areas. However, the government has taken a rare step: they’ve issued a “subsequent earthquake advisory,” warning that there is a slightly higher risk of another major quake in the coming week.

The 2011 Japan Earthquake DFID – UK Department for International Development, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Affected Areas

For those planning a trip to Japan, it will be crucial to know which areas have been affected and which destinations are safe to visit.

Northern Japan: Iwate, Aomori, and Miyagi experienced the strongest tremors during this earthquake, and following the quake, more than 170,000 people were ordered to evacuate immediately to higher ground. Therefore, if your travel plans include the Sanriku Coast or remote areas of eastern Hokkaido, please consider choosing other, safer destinations.

Central Japan: The earthquake was felt in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Chiba, but no damage to infrastructure or tourist attractions has been reported. Life here continues as usual.

Western Japan: Western cities such as Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima were not affected by this earthquake. Since the epicenter was located in the northeast, there is no physical impact on tourists traveling to the Kansai region.

Affected Airports, Flights, & Transportation

The biggest nightmare when traveling is when flights are disrupted, and whether the local transportation system will still be running.

Airports: Major hubs like Narita and Haneda in Tokyo are operating normally. In the north, New Chitose Airport (Sapporo) and Sendai Airport are also fully functional. While there were brief pauses to inspect runways immediately after the tremor, no major cancellations have been linked to the earthquake.

Shinkansen (Bullet Trains): Japan’s bullet trains are famous for their safety sensors. The moment a quake is detected, the power cuts and the trains stop. There were some temporary delays on the Tohoku and Hokkaido Shinkansen lines for safety checks, but service has largely resumed.

Local Transport: Some local JR lines in the northern coastal regions were suspended due to the tsunami advisory. If you’re planning to use local trains in Iwate or Aomori, you should check the JR East website for real-time updates.

Is it Safe to Travel to Japan Now?

Yes, but only for destinations located far from the epicenter of this earthquake, such as Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka. Furthermore, because Japan is fully prepared for earthquakes and has the necessary infrastructure in place, structural collapses in modern buildings are rare.

The greatest danger would come from coastal areas during a tsunami warning. However, the JMA has also issued a Megaquake Advisory, with a 1% probability of occurrence. So if your destination is the East Coast, please think carefully and postpone your trip.

Current Travel Advisory

Before making a final decision, it is best to consult your government’s guidance.

U.S. Embassy: They’ve issued a standard alert for the tsunami warning, advising citizens to stay away from beaches in the north. They haven’t told people to avoid Japan entirely, just to be “aware” and “prepared.”

UK Foreign Office (FCDO): Their advice remains similar. They emphasize that Japan is in a major earthquake zone and that you should follow the instructions of local authorities.

Australia/Canada: No major “Do Not Travel” warnings have been issued. The focus is entirely on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region.

The general consensus regarding international travel advisories is that, as long as communication channels remain open and travelers avoid immediately evacuating the area, the risks associated with traveling to Japan are manageable.

What to Do If You’re in Japan Right Now

If you’re already in Japan, there’s no need to panic. Check this checklist to make sure you’re prepared for any eventuality.

Download the “Safety Tips” App: Created by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), this app sends earthquake and tsunami alerts in English directly to your phone.

Know Your “Higher Ground”: If you are staying in a coastal town in the north, look for the blue tsunami evacuation signs. They point toward hills or reinforced “tsunami towers.”

Keep Your Passport and Power Bank with You: In the rare event of a power outage or evacuation, you want your ID and a way to charge your phone.

Stay Away from the Water: Even if the waves look small, tsunami currents are incredibly powerful. If there is an active advisory, stay off the beach.

How to Obtain Official Information

During a crisis, misinformation is the biggest source of panic, so don’t trust random tweets. Please stick to these sources:

JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency): Their website (jma.go.jp) has an English version that provides the most accurate earthquake and tsunami data.

NHK World: Japan’s public broadcaster. They provide 24/7 English news and are the first to broadcast emergency alerts on TV and radio.

Japan Safe Travel (JST): A Twitter/X account (@JapanSafeTravel) managed by the Japan National Tourism Organization. They post updates specifically for foreign tourists.

Is there a tsunami warning for Japan right now?

As of late Monday evening, April 20, 2026, many of the major tsunami warnings have been downgraded to advisories or lifted entirely. However, the JMA still advises people along the Sanriku coast to stay away from the shoreline as small sea-level changes may continue. Always check the JMA website for the latest minute-by-minute updates.

How far did the tsunami reach Japan?

The tsunami waves were largely confined to the northern Pacific coast. An 80cm wave reached Kuji Port, and waves around 40cm were recorded in Miyako and Urakawa. These waves did not travel inland like the devastating 2011 tsunami; they were mostly surges that stayed within the harbor and immediate shoreline areas.

Is it safe to travel to Japan right now due to an earthquake?

Yes, for the vast majority of the country. If you are traveling to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, or Southern Japan, it is business as usual. If you are heading to the northeast (Tohoku), you should remain vigilant due to the “subsequent earthquake advisory” which remains in effect until April 27.
